Nelson’s Wildlife Safari Coming to White Lake Community Library
Summer Reading Kick-off Event Set for June 16

It will be a “wild” night at the library on Thursday, June 16 when Nelson’s Wildlife Safari arrives with a variety of exotic animals from around the world.  This free show begins at 6:30 p.m., and is an excellent opportunity to learn about, and even touch, unusual creatures.  All are welcome, but the program will be most appropriate for school-aged children.  This event is the kick-off for the library’s annual Summer Reading program.

“On Your Mark, Get Set, Read” is the theme for this year’s free, 6 week program designed to keep kids reading and learning during the summer months. It is open to all youth, preschoolers through 6th grade, with a separate program for teens.  The children’s program will feature weekly story times, crafts, and Family Night events for all ages.  Several special events just for older children and teens are also planned.  Sign-up begins on Thursday, June 16, and the program ends on Saturday, July 30.

Program participants will receive a welcome kit full of goodies, including a set of reading logs for recording their reading adventures. The first six reading logs each child returns will earn them a coupon for a treat from a local business, and each log is an entry in the grand prize drawings.  Each child who meets his or her reading goal will also receive a ticket to a Whitecaps game and a pass to the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum.

This year’s grand prizes include tickets to major-league sporting events, including Red Wings, Lions, Tigers, and Pistons games; passes to the Kalamazoo Air Zoo; and John Ball Zoo memberships. These prizes are made possible by a partnership with WOTV8, Meijer, West Michigan Whitecaps, John Ball Zoo, Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, and the Air Zoo.  Funding for local programming is provided by the Friends of White Lake Community Library and the used book sale.  Additional local supporters include Subway, Taco Bell, Pitkins, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, The General Store, Home Services of White Lake, NorthStar Cinemas, Family Video, and Emily White.

A variety of children’s programs will be offered throughout the six-week program, including all-ages story times on Tuesdays at 1:30, evening story times every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 6:30, drop-in craft workshops on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. till noon, and Family Night programs every Thursday at 6:30.   The Family Night highlights include Jim Merrills’ Cup Stacking program on June 23, a visit from the Kalamazoo Air Zoo on July 21, and a magic show featuring Tom Plunkard on July 28.  A four-week Extreme Sport S.T.E.A.M. Club for kids age 10 and up will meet on Tuesday mornings in July to explore the science behind sports like auto racing and sky diving.  A complete calendar of events is available at the library, and on the children's tab here on the website.

This year’s teen program is “Get in the Game - Read!  Designed for young people age 12 and up, it offers a chance to win prizes for reading or listening to books during the summer.  Participants earn a small prize for reading 250 and 500 pages, and are also eligible for the grand prize drawing.  Additional prizes will be awarded to the top three teen readers. Several events just for teens will also be offered, including gaming sessions every Friday from 2 to 4, and a Zombie Apocalypse Nerf War on June 30, after the library has closed for the night.
